General Information on Associates Degrees

  • Typically takes two years to complete
  • Common requirements are for the student to have a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Most programs prepare you to either pursue a Bachelor's degree upon completion or enter the workforce (if currently employed you may be able to get a promotion, job advancement, or a new job)
    Common Types of Associate Degrees:
  • Associate of Arts Degree (A.A.)
  • Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.)
  • Associate of Arts in Accounting Degree
  • Associate of Arts in Business Administration degree
  • Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice Degree
  • Associate of Arts in General Studies Degree
  • Associate of Arts in Health Administration Degree
  • Associate of Arts in Information Technology Degree


  • This type of degree is an undergraduate degree which generally takes about 2 years to complete. The majority of associate’s degrees are issued from community colleges, junior colleges, and vocational colleges. However it is possible to obtain an associates degree from a more traditional university.

    If you plan on later earning your bachelor’s degree is in not generally necessary to first complete an associate degree.

    The type of career you wish to enter will most likely gear you towards what type of a degree you will need to earn. For example an associates degree is usually what is required for certain careers such as to become an X-Ray Technician or a Respiratory Therapy Technician (and many other careers).

    In order to attend you will need to be a high school graduate or have completed your GED. These types of degrees generally will prepare someone for an entry level career position. If you decide later to go on for Bachelors there is a good chance that most of your classes or course work will be applied towards the Bachelors. However if you know for sure that is your plan you confirm this before hand with the college or university you would attend.
