Dental Assistant Job Description

A Dental Assistant job description is as follows. You will greet your patients with a smile and take them back to the operatory that you have prepared for them. Take any necessary X-rays and let the Dentist know you are ready for him. Assist the Doctor in each procedure and hand him the necessary instruments. You will suction the water out of the patients’ mouth with the suction tip, and keep the site clean for the Doctor to see what he is doing.

After you have finished with the patient, you will walk them back to the front desk and hand them off to the receptionist and let her know when another appointment is needed. Most of the time you will need to write in the patients’ chart and make note of what was done. This helps free up the Doctors’ time so that he may move onto the next patient quickly.

Then you will return to the operatory and take all the used instruments to the sterilization room where you will disinfect the instruments, bag them and place them in the autoclave to be sterilized. Then you must sterilize and wipe down the room. After that you will need to set the room up for the next patient. The instruments needed will be based on which procedure will be performed. Whether it is a simple filling or crown prep or a root canal procedure, different instruments will be used.

This will be done repeatedly throughout the day. At the end of the day, you will want to set up at least two of your operatory rooms for the first two patients the next day. You will also need to refill all rooms with paper products such as cotton 2x2’s, cotton swabs and patient napkins (bibs). Also make sure your anesthesia drawer has enough cartridges of lidocaine and needles. Then your day is finished and you can go home and get some rest and start over again the next day.

Dental assistants perform a variety of duties. They should not be confused with dental hygienists, who perform more clinical tasks. Dentists rely on dental assistants to handle an increasing number of responsibilities. This gives the dentist the time to focus on more profitable procedures.
