Necessary Qualifications
Enlisted personnel must have a high school diploma or GED. They must enlist between the ages of 17 and 35. Individuals who are 17 must have parental consent. Candidates must pass a physical and a written exam, called the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. It may be a good idea to take this exam before enlisting. It can be a useful tool in determining which branch of the armed forces to enter and which occupation is best suited to the applicant’s skills. Applicants should also be a U.S. citizen (or be a permanent resident), possess a birth certificate, and not have a felony record.
Monthly Earnings and Benefits
Military personnel follow an earnings structure. Most enlisted personnel earn between $1,000 and $1,800 per month. In addition to monthly pay, the military provides free room and board, free medical and dental care, military store privileges, a military clothing allowance, and 30 days of paid vacation. After two years of service, personnel are able to utilize Veterans Administration (VA) benefits. Healthcare, loans, job counseling, and other services are available.
