Security Guards and Gaming Surveillance Officers
Many businesses employ security guards to protect their place of business from vandalism, theft, fire, terrorism, or any other act of violence. Guards monitor property and buildings for any illegal activity. They contact police, fire, or emergency medical services when necessary. They are also responsible for maintaining reports about all observations during a shift. Some are later called to testify in court.

Career Opportunities
Security guards typically work in static position or on mobile patrol. Duties differ according to the assignment. Those working in static security develop long-term relationships with personnel. They know the building and grounds extensively, monitoring alarms and closed circuit TV. Guards who work on mobile patrol are responsible for a geographical zone. They either walk or drive to each location conducting security checks. They arrest criminals, answer service calls about possible problems, and issue traffic violations. Job responsibilities also vary according to the type, size and location of employment. Those working in department stores often work undercover to prevent customer or employee theft. Guards who are employed by theaters or shopping centers often monitor parking lots for illegal activity. Those working in transportation terminals are responsible for detecting weapons or explosives. Museums or art galleries hire security guards to inspect people and their belongings as they enter or exit the building. Armored car guards work in a particularly dangerous field. They must protect money or other valuables in transit. Carrying these valuables from a building to the truck places them in an exposed position. Therefore, they typically wear bulletproof vests. Gaming surveillance officers and gaming investigators work in casinos. They investigate cheating or theft by either employees or patrons. Surveillance equipment, such as video monitors, is utilized.
Necessary Qualifications
Licensure is required to become a security guard or gaming surveillance officer. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, pass a background check, and complete some classroom training in order to receive a license. Ongoing drug screenings are often conducted, as well. Armed guards need more formal training than unarmed guards. They must be licensed by the government in order to carry weapons. Many armed guards are police officers. Due to the larger responsibilities and more stringent requirements, these guards usually earn higher salaries and better benefits than unarmed guards. Security guards must demonstrate good judgment and common sense. A professional appearance is necessary as they deal with the public quite often. Good physical and mental health is necessary, as well.
Salaries and Advancement
Advancement opportunities are limited. Some guards are promoted to supervisory or managerial positions. Security guard salaries range between $13,000 and $31,000 a year. Gaming surveillance officers and investigators earn between $15,000 and $35,000 annually. They typically work eight-hour shifts and total forty hours per week. Many guards work part-time.
