Medical billing and coding specialists are in demand and with the aging population the career field will likely keep pace of needing more medical billers. A person who works, either as an employee or an independent contractor, as a medical billing specialist performs many functions with the main one being to submit insurance claims for doctor’s offices, nurses, hospitals, and other medical facilities in order for the facility to get paid. Medical billers submit these claims to insurance companies but they also submit claims to Medicaid and Medicare. A medical biller will need to receive proper training in order to understand many areas of a medical practice. For example they will need to know how to read a doctor’s notes and interpret procedures for proper coding. In order to learn all the skills required start a career in the medical billing and coding field a person should contact several different schools nearby and may also want to contact some online schools to learn more about what they offer and how long it will take to complete a program.
