The history of Alaska is that the area was purchased from Russian interests on March 30, 1867. After quite a few administrative changes, the land became an organized territory in 1912 and the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959. Alaska is found in the extreme northwest portion of the North American continent. It is by far the largest U.S. state, and also ranks as the wealthiest and most racially diverse. The name "Alaska" means "the mainland", or more specifically "the object towards which the action of the sea is directed".
