The State of Kansas is considered a Midwestern state that is found in the central region of the U.S. This area is commonly referred to as the American "Heartland". People who live in Kansas are often called "Kansans". The state of Kansas is named after the Kansas River that flows through it. The Kansas River was originally named after the Native American Kansa tribe, who once lived in the area. Some people say that the tribe's name means either "people of the wind" or "people of the south wind", but it is not known whether this was term’s original meaning.
