The capital of the state of Mississippi is Jackson, which is also the largest city in the state. Mississippi is bordered on the east by Alabama, on the west by Louisiana and Arkansas, on the north by the state of Tennessee, on the south by Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico. The state of Mississippi is found in the southern region of the U.S. Mississippi gets its name from the Mississippi River, which runs along its western state boundary. Most of Mississippi is considered part of the East Gulf Coastal Plain, which is mostly made up of low hills, such as the Pine Hills in the south and the North Central Hills.
