New Hampshire ranks 41st in population, 46th in total area of the 50 states, and 44th in land area. The state is found in the New England region of the northeastern United States of America, and was given its name after the county of Hampshire in southern England. New Hampshire became the first post-colonial sovereign nation in the Americas when it broke away from Great Britain in January 1776. And six months later, it was also one of the original thirteen States that founded the United States of America. New Hampshire is the only state that does not have a general sales tax or a personal income tax.
