North Dakota is the 19th largest state by area and but it’s only 48th in ranking for U.S. population, having just more than 640,000 people in 2006. The state is found both in the Midwestern and Western regions of the United States of America. In the western part of North Dakota, the land is filled with hills and produces coal and oil. The Missouri River runs through the western region of the state. The Red River creates the Red River Valley in the eastern part of the state, which is known for its rich farmland. North Dakota’s capital is Bismarck and the city of Fargo is the largest city in the state.
