South Dakota is named after both the Lakota and Dakota (Sioux) American Indian tribes. The state of South Dakota was accepted into the Union on November 2, 1889. South Dakota is located in the Midwestern region of the United States of America. The most popular area of the state is in the southwestern region known as the Black Hills, which is a cluster of low, pine-covered mountains. This area of the state has great religious importance to local American Indians and is also a major draw for the state’s tourism industry. The Black Hills are more commonly known for being the home of Mt. Rushmore, which is also a widely-used symbol of South Dakota.
